7:19p - Long day as usual
Wednesday of course. Spiced up by the fact that the cataloging group had a meeting in Rockton. I'd never been there before, so I looked up directions and then, as usual, looked at a map and couldn't imagine why Mapquest used such a roundabout way to save four or five miles. I took a simpler route, which would have been fine, except everything is melting again today. There was water flowing across the road in several places, and repair crews causing delays in other places. By the time I got to Rockton I was beginning to think I might fall off the edge of the earth, or else encounter the North Pole by accident. I did get there though, just barely in time.
After the meeting I had to head for Harvard to work until 8 pm as usual. Ran into traffic snarls of people rushing out of Rockford and Loves Park to their suburban subdivisions in, I guess, Machesney Park. By the time I got to work I was really tired of driving. Met at the door by a coworker saying she had been trying to call my cell phone to tell me not to come in, as there were sufficient staff and I didn't need to be there. Except I do not talk on or answer the phone while driving. So, I'm here, might as well stay as planned. Only a half hour more now.
In spite of the driving mess, I was amused briefly by a sign as I passed through Argyle, a tiny speck of a village along the road. It said something to the effect of:
ARGYLE:
POPULATION 89
DOGS 15
CATS 22
CHICKENS 12
GOATS 15
AND 1 OLD GROUCH
Presumably not an "official" sign post...
