10:40a - Fantasy Retro: Steampunk as art
Some of you may well be aware of this. I'm probably late to discover it. I knew about "steampunk" as a writing genre, but was unaware of it as a genre in art until just the last few weeks. It consists of recasting functional and contemporary tools into the forms and stylistics we would expect from the Victorian and Edwardian eras (roughly 1835-1915) and there are a few practitioners who have carried it to magnificent extremes. The photo below shows a "telegraph sounder" that taps out news headlines derived from RSS feeds. Click on the image to reach a gallery and article from Wired magazine that describes the movement and some of its leading artists.

Really now, I don't have time for another hobby. I don't.! But the idea of turning an early microcomputer, such as a TRS80, into one of these things is just irresistible. Or perhaps a cell phone that looks like a pocket watch? An MP3 player with headphones that came right out of the Titanic? The possibilities...

1:49p - Focaccia with Caramelized Onions
Incredibly easy to make, tasty too, and healthier than pizza. Photo also features a handwoven towel made from handspun cottons, and an old-fashioned flour scale that I use for baking.
( Recipe under cut for anyone interested... )

9:50p - This just in
The Earth Science department at McHenry County College in Crystal Lake announced today that with the addition of Friday's snowfall, the all time record for snowfall in a single winter in McHenry County has been broken. The former high, from the season of 1978-79 (the year that Jane Byrne became mayor of Chicago because her predecessor's administration mishandled snow removal so badly) was 74.5 inches. We have now reached 77.8 inches for 2007-08, and the season of possible accumulating snowfall is not yet over. The new record covers the period from 1900 to date. Prior to that, there were no reliable records for the county.
It's already melting, though. Too late in the year for snow to stick around very long.
